Come hell or high water, Mexican boxing superstar Saul Canelo Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KO’s) wants to fight on May 2nd, Cinco De Mayo weekend.
Baring Floyd Mayweather fighting Manny Pacquiao, Alvarez, 24, will be getting his wish, facing dangerous puncher James Kirkland (32-1, 28KO’s) on free HBO the lucrative Cinco weekend.
While the date is not set in stone, the fight is expected to move forward May 2nd, should the Mayweather vs Pacquiao bout not materialize on that date.
If this happens, Alvarez, a young Mexican star will be on free HBO television during a the Mexican holiday weekend. At the same time, fans can pay $70 for a Mayweather pay-per-view.
And the business of boxing continues to stab itself in the foot.
The Alvarez camp picked Kirkland, 31, after negotiations with Miguel Cotto fell apart for a potential big money fight.
Kirkland has not fought since December, 2013, when he dominated Glen Tapia in a thrilling sixth round knockout victory.
Should Mayweather not face Pacquiao, his backup plans are rumoured to be a Cotto rematch or Amir Khan bout.
